From Newborn to Toddler: Which Boba Carrier?

From Newborn to Toddler: Which Boba Carrier?

We love working with Boba because they are a family business who keep family at the heart of their designs. Created by Robert and Elizabeth Antunovic as they travelled the world with their own children, Boba loves to enable parents to stay active whilst caring for the needs of their little ones.

Having used slings and carriers with our own babies we are well aware that the choice of products available can be a little overwhelming! That’s why we’re always happy to speak to you and take real satisfaction in helping parents find the best slings to suit their unique requirements.

With that in mind, we’ve put together a quick guide to the Boba family of slings. We currently offer the Boba Wrap, Boba X, Boba 4G and Boba Air Carriers. So what is the difference between each of them? What are the pros and cons? And which is best for each stage of your child’s development? Let’s take a look…

Boba Wrap

The Boba Wrap is the perfect choice for newborns. You can use it from birth until around 18 months when wrapped snugly, although it will excel in the first 4-6 months.

What’s good?

You may have heard about the fourth trimester? It’s that period of great change and development that your newborn experiences in the first 3 months of life as they adjust to the world outside your womb. A wrap style carrier is a great way to ease your baby into the world, offering safe, comfortable, womb-like support for newborns right from day one.

The Boba Wrap is made of high quality French Terry material (95% cotton with a touch of spandex to retain its shape), which clings perfectly to the contours of your baby and provides the perfect amount of stretch and flexibility. You can also buy the Boba Wrap in a bamboo/cotton blend which excels at regulating your baby’s temperature, keeping them cool in summer and warm in winter.

Things to consider

We generally recommend using wrap-style carriers as the very best start-up option for newborns, but are aware that some parents prefer the convenience of using a carrier that doesn’t involve any tieing. Close Caboo or Zensling (not part of the Boba family) are great newborn options that offer the benefits of a wrap with no need to tie. The Neko Switch is also a great alternative to the Boba Wrap. It’s a wrap conversion buckle carrier made from woven fabric with a unique strap-system that reduces pressure on a newborns spine.

However, many parents find that once they have mastered the technique of tieing a baby wrap, they love the versatility and comfort of a carrier like the Boba Wrap which moulds perfectly to their baby’s growing body.

Boba X

The Boba X buckle carrier is the newest member of the Boba family and is one of the best carriers to offer a truly practical and cost-effective newborn to toddler option.

What’s good?

The Boba X has a fully-adjustable back panel that allows it to transform from a newborn carrier (with built-in neck support) to a roomy toddler carrier. Its unique ‘zip-on’ seat extenders makes it comfortable for taller children and gives it that extra edge over similar carriers (like the Tula Free To Grow).

This clever design won the Boba X a gold Mumii award earlier this year, and we’ve heard nothing but positive reviews from baby wearers in our community. Find out more about the carrier in our Boba X spotlight blog post here and Boba X reviews here

Things to consider

At £125, the Boba X is the most expensive option in the Boba family, although its versatility does make it a cost effective option, negating the need to buy multiple carriers as your newborn grows in to a robust toddler. That said, a sling consultant would often recommend a stretchy wrap for those early newborn weeks, moving to a buckle carrier or other carrier optoin from 1-2 months onward.

Boba 4G

The Boba 4G is the predecessor to the Boba X and remains a popular choice with customers.

What’s good?

With its removable infant insert, the Boba 4G adjusts to carry children from birth up to 45lbs, excelling up to 2-3 years. The detachable infant insert adjusts to two different positions, allowing newborns to sit higher-up, and unsnapping for older infants to sit safely in the carrier.

The Boba 4G also features detachable foot straps that attach to the waistband and allow older children to sit in the carrier comfortably whilst enabling a hip-healthy seating position.

Things to consider

Whilst the Boba 4G offers some versatility with its adjustable insert, the Boba X is a significant upgrade in terms of design (we just love those zip-on seat extenders!) although the 4G’s lower price point means it remains a popular option for many families.

Boba Air

The Boba Air is a lightweight, breathable baby carrier, perfect for travel.

What’s good?

The Boba Air was designed with travel in mind. It’s lightweight, compact and can be rolled into an integrated self-storing bag. Super-easy to slip into your bag, the carrier is made of 100% water-repellent nylon that is easy to clean.

These practical features have not distracted from Boba’s ergonomic design. The Boba Air is super comfortable for parents and offers a deep, supportive seat with padded leg openings which fully supports your child’s back and allows for hip-healthy carrying.

Things to consider

The Boba Air offers a practical and safe option for carrying baby on the go. However, if you’re looking to carry smaller babies or want to carry your child on a daily basis, we would recommend choosing one of the other Boba carriers designed to offer greater versatility.
